Our Seattle deck company runs into some interesting projects from time to time. This project was commissioned to us after another Seattle deck builder performed some questionable work on this home after a tree fell on it. We ended up tearing out the entire deck they had built and replaced it with our own. We assisted the home owner with documentation of the errors and they ended up having the previous company fund the entire replacement.
Fascia and choosing Azek for the project.
Appearance and ease of maintenance were the primary values the homeowner wanted out of their project. Our suggestion was Azek for the decking and Alumarail for the railing. We chose Azek specifically because of the intent to use a large amount of fascia, the vertical wrap around the frame. I would characterize most composite fascia as low performing, the heat expansion of the material coupled with it’s thin profile renders it susceptible to deformation. I have not however observed this with the Azek PVC product. Being that we were wrapping almost all of the exposed framing with fascia Azek was the only good choice.
Aluminum railing
My favorite railing solution is the Alumarail product. It combines good looks with exceptional strength, in fact, I know of no other product that compares in strength and durability. It also comes in less expensive than most of the railing systems offered by the decking manufacturers. This deck uses the “brown” color. It is actually more a graphite dark gray color. I consider it a less intense “black”, easier to keep looking clean and a little softer and organic in presentation. More appropriate for most decks than a pure jet black.
These photos were actually taken three years after the completion of the deck so, clearly the Azek product and Alumarail are acquitting themselves nicely as time passes.
